DIY Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray

IMG_7961

I try to make a hot yoga class at least once a week, at one point I was trying to make a class at least 3 times a week minimum. I love hot yoga for some many reasons, but I really love walking out of class dripping in sweat! It just gives me that detoxified, light, euphoric feeling.. you know ?

Well after all of that sweat dripping off of your body on to your mat, it’s obviously very important to clean your mat afterwards.. otherwise.. yuck.

You can totally go out and buy a cleaner for your mat for around $15 – $25… OR you can make one yourself!!!!

The fun part about making your own spray is that you get to play around with types of oils and smells! I still love the typical lemongrass scent for my cleaner but feel free to  grab your favorite essential oils and get to mixing!

Here’s what you need:

Spray Bottle: You can use any spray bottle you like. I used a bottle that I bought from the dollar store, but if you plan on doing some heavy duty yoga mat cleaning, you may want a heavier duty bottle.

Witch Hazel: This is one of the main cleaning agent in this mixture. You can also use white vinegar if you prefer.. but usually you can find the Witch Hazel un-scented which allows the essential oils to be more pernounced. You can buy this at  any health food store.

Essential Oils: Any essential oils will do, but it’s important to include those with antibacterial properties, such as tea tree, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. For this spray, I chose Tea Tree, Orange, and lemongrass for a nice citrus smell!

Water: Water should be about 3/4 the entire mixture. It dilutes the mixture, keeping it from being too overpowering

How to make:

Step 1: Fill your bottle about 3/4 full with water.. depending on how your big your bottle is, you can double this.

Step 2: Pour in witch hazel almost to the top of the bottle, leaving a little room for oil. If you are looking for a more powerful cleaner, use a little more witch hazel

Step 3: Add in one – two  drops of each oil, and then adding more in different amounts, smelling along the way until you reach your ideal scent.

Step 4: Cleaning – pray solution generously, covering one side of your mat. Wipe down your mat with a damp cloth. Repeat on the other side and then hang to dry! It should take 5 minutes to dry completely.
